Medical Examiner Mission Statement

In accordance with Wisconsin Statute 979.01and Health and Social Services 135, the Waupaca County Medical Examiner's Office is responsible for the investigation of all reportable deaths that occur within Waupaca County.

Death Investigation is a team effort. We must work collaboratively with law enforcement, the district attorney, pathologists, other physicians, the state crime lab, the hygiene lab and others.

Our ultimate goal is to protect the living from injury or death through a complete and proper investigation of death. We should provide our service with the highest regard for human dignity and deal with the receivers of this service on an individual basis and without prejudice. We need to assist the families of the deceased in a compassionate and humane manner; helping them with initial funeral home arrangements, advising them of available counseling and speaking with them concerning organ, tissue and bone procurement, among other things.

There is a difficult and delicate balance we must maintain. We must be suspicious but not accusing while being compassionate and caring, all the while not losing sight of our ultimate goal; a complete and thorough, unbiased death investigation.
