What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person-to-person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a new form of coronavirus that was first found in people in December 2019. It has the potential to cause severe illness in some people.

How does COVID-19 spread?
People with COVID-19 can spread it to others when they cough or sneeze. The virus is found in droplets from the throat and nose. When someone coughs or sneezes, other people near them can breathe in those droplets. The virus can also spread when someone touches an object with the virus on it. If that person then uses their hands to touch their face, mouth, or eyes, the virus can make them sick.

Who is at risk of getting COVID-19?
Anyone who is close to someone who is infected with COVID-19 is at risk for catching the disease. Based on current information, older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions might be at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

What are the signs and symptoms of COVID-19?
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

This list does not include all possible symptoms. 

How can I prevent getting COVID-19?
There is no vaccine to keep you from catching COVID-19. 

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer. Try to not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if you haven’t washed your hands.
  • Avoid close contact with others, especially those who are sick. Stay home as much as possible!
  • CDC recommends covering your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies).
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow. Immediately wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily.

Who should get tested?
Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or has been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 is encouraged to get tested. 

What should I do If I am sick?
If you are sick, stay home! Separate yourself from others in your home, and keep track of your symptoms. If you have emergency warning signs, get medical attention right away.

When should I seek medical attention?
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs can include: t
rouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to awaken, bluish lips or faceThere may be other emergency signs. Please consult your medical provider for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.
